Sports Development Officer

Job Description

Sports development officers promote sports and coordinate the participation of young people in sport.

Duties and Tasks

Sports development officers may perform the following tasks:

  • develop and coordinate the delivery of sport and recreation programs, services and initiatives to address equity, social justice and community issues
  • assist in the administration of grant programs and the gathering of information to increase the understanding of community sport and recreational issues
  • give organisational support to schools or clubs
  • manage the finances of approved programs and projects
  • advise teachers and coaches, conduct coaching clinics and training camps, and give out information and materials from sporting bodies
  • develop training exercises to improve skills
  • act as a coach for individuals or teams in competitions
  • act as a talent scout for clubs
  • schedule competitions and arrange and allocate venues
  • oversee the maintenance of sports grounds, courts and venues

  • problem-solving and negotiation skills
  • a strong interest in sport and recreation
  • good written and oral communication skills
  • good interpersonal skills and able to interact effectively with a diverse range of people
  • prepared to travel and work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
