Engineering Trades (Boilermaker, Fitter & Turner, Sheet metal)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Engineering trades include boiler makers, fitters and turners and sheet metal workers. Boiler makers construct, assemble, maintain and repair steam boilers and related items, assemble boiler frame tanks or vats following blueprints.  Fitters and turners read drawings and specifications and use machinery to manufacture and assemble metal components into products such as tools, machinery, and machine components. Sheet metal workers fabricate and repair sheet metal products and equipment such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes and furnace casings involving setting up and operating machines to cut, bend and straighten sheet metal.

DUTIES AND TASKS

Engineering trade workers may perform the following tasks:

  • make, assemble, and fit parts together
  • read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints
  • use specialised cutting and shaping tools and machining equipment to produce assembly parts
  • handle and position metals for manipulation
  • inspect equipment, structures, or materials.

  • able to perform routine, sometimes repetitive tasks
  • good concentration
  • ability to follow safety standards
  • hand-eye coordination and manual agility
