JOB DESCRIPTION
Boat builders construct, fit-out and repair marine vessels. This might involve drafting an initial design and getting approval from the client, then building the frame, hull, deck and cabins, installing the engine and furnishing through to painting and finishing the vessel. They may undertake repairs on a variety of vessels and may need to prepare the slipway or build cradles to support vessels during construction, transportation, repair and launching.
DUTIES AND TASKS
Boat builders may perform the following tasks:
- design and draft specifications
- work with timber, fibreglass and other materials to build or repair a boat
- read and follow regulations and standards
- carry-out inspections and testing of all the vessel’s functions
- carry-out safety inspections.
PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS
- good at maths
- enjoy practical and manual tasks, to be good at technical activities
- enjoy physical work
- comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces
- have an interest in boating and marine environments
- attention to detail, organised and methodical
- thorough understanding of safety at sea
